Subjunctive dengan Would Rather

Sebagai subjunctive, ungkapan ini dipergunakan untuk menyatakan suatu preference, yaitu subjek pertama lebih suka subjek kedua untuk melakukan/tidak melakukan sesuatu, namun keinginan itu tidak terpenuhi.

S1 + would rather + that* + S2 + past tense

S1 + would rather + that* + S2 + past perfect tense

* that dapat dihilangkan.

Subjunctive dengan As If/As Though

Kedua frasa ini dalam bahasa Indonesia mempunyai arti yang sama, yaitu seolah-olah atau seakan-akan. Penggunaannya pun tidak memiliki perbedaan. Jadi, keduanya bisa saling menggantikan.

as if/as though + past tense

as if/as though + past perfect tense

As if/as though diikuti past tense untuk menunjukkan suatu keadaan yang berlawanan/bertentangan dengan kenyataan sekarang. Sedangkan untuk menyatakan suatu keadaan yang berlawanan dengan kenyataan di waktu lampau, past perfect tense digunakan.

Contoh:

He acts as if he were a rich man.

(Real fact : He isn’t a rich man.)

You talk as though you knew everything.

(Real fact : You don’t know everything.)

Rina talked as if she had mastered the topic.

(Real fact : She didn’t master the topic.)

He behaved as though he had been possessed.

(Real fact : He wasn’t possessed.)

• Were digunakan untuk semua subjek.
• Kalimat-kalimat pada pola di atas selain menyatakan suatu keadaan yang berlawanan, bisa juga untuk menyatakan suatu keragu-raguan. Pada contoh pertama, misalnya, bisa juga bermakna bahwa kita tidak tahu pasti (ragu-ragu) apakah ia memang benar-benar orang kaya atau tidak.
